chapter 1
*Why is Kirsti not afraid of the soldiers?
*How would you have felt if you had been Annemarie when the soldiers spoke to her? Why?

Anna November 5
I think Kirsti isn't afraid of the soldiers because she doesn't know what they are doing to her country. If I was Annemarie and the soldiers were talking to me in stern voices, I would start running home and away from them.

chapter 2
Do you think King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the Nazis? Why?*
Would you be willing to die to protect the leader of your country? Why?
What happened to Annemarie's older sister Lise?
How has Annemarie's family changed after the death of Lise?

Anna November 5
I think King Christian should have had a country help fight for them and so the answer to that question is no. I pearsonally would not want to have to die for my country because I wouldn't think that it was worth it unless I was in the Navy or something like that. I wouldn't just go die and say, "I love my country" . Annemarie's older sister got hit by a car or was in a car crash. Annemarie and her famiy rarerly talk about her. Their only keepsake left of her is her trunk with her wedding dress in it. Her parents never open it.

Chapter 3 Annemarie believes that ordinary people like her don't have to be courageous.
Do you agree with this idea?
What religion do the Rosens practice?
Predict what you think will happen next in the story.

Anna November 6 I think that ordinary people should be couarageaus, even in the small things because it dosen't have to be a really big thing, just like standing up to a bully. Annemarie's friends the Rosens are Jewish. Ellen wears a gold chain neclace to prove it. She got it when she was really little. I think next in the story the soldiers will come to Annemarie's house and make sure that they aren't hiding anyone.

Chapter 4 What are the answers to the questions that are the titles of the first three chapters?
Why was it a long night?
Why does Ellen spend the night with Annemarie?

Anna November 5
The answers are the Why are you running? Is because they are racing. Who is the man who rides past? Is the king on his horse. Where is mrs Hirsch? She can't be running the store because the soldiers shut it down. It was a long night because the soldiers came and inspected the house and Ellen, Annemarie, and Kirsti.
Ellen spends the night at Annemarie's house because the soldiers took the list of Jews from the temple and are trying to kill the people on the lists so Ellen is pretending to be Lisie because Lisie had brown curly hair when she was a baby, just like Ellen's hair is now.

Chapter 5 Vocabulary: Star of David – a six pointed star; a symbol of Judaism
Why do the soldiers come to the Johansen’s apartment?
What do you think they expected to find?
Why does Annemarie tear the necklace from Ellen’s neck?
When Papa tore the pictures from his photo album, what was he trying to prove?
Do you think Annemarie is brave?
Why does Mama want to travel to Uncle Henrik’s house alone?
What are Papa and Uncle Henrik really talking about when they talk about “cigarettes”?

Anna ward November 5
The soldiers come to make sure the Rosens aren't hiding in with the family. I think the soldiers expected to find another family hiding in the attic or in the corner of their house. Annemarie tears the necklace from Ellen because if she is wearing it and the soldiers see it, she would for sure be killed. (Nice thought, huh?) Papa tore the pictures from the alum to prove that he wasn't hiding anyone. He was lying to protect his friends & family. So far in the book, I think that Annemarie is kind of relying on her parents to make everything ok. I think she has high hopes, though. Like she is always telling Ellen that the soldiers arn't going to take her away.

Nice Anna! Great Job! ~Allie G.
Wow Anna this is awesome!!! Soo coolerful and detailed! SWEETNESS!!!! - Sarah

  • 3. Why are Mama and Annemarie frightened when Kirsti decides to talk to the soldiers on the train?
    4. What do you think the soldiers expected Kirsti to say?

Anna November 5
Uncle Henrik's house is a good place for Jews to hide because he lives right next to the big sea, and at the end of the big blue sea is SWEEDEN!!!! where they have no evil ruller and you can be whatever religion you want without being murdered. I felt really scared in this chapter like whern the soldiers were inspecting people on the train, I thought that they were just goung to see right through Ellen and know that she was Jewish and not let her off the train. Mama & Annemarie and scared when Kirsti talks to the soldiers bacause they think that she is going to say why they have an extra "family member" on the train with them.

1. How do Ellen and Annemarie feel as they explore Gilleleje?
2. Why is this visit different for Annemarie than other times she visited Uncle Henrik?
3. Describe Uncle Henrik and Mama’s relationship.

Anna November 19th
Ellen and Annemarie feel curiorus and want to explore. This visit is different than any other visit that Annemarie has made because they are running away from the soldiers and setting the Rosens and many other Jews to freedom in Sweden. Most of the time Annemarie was going to visit for family reasons, instead of German Soldier issues. Mama and Uncle are related because Mama is Uncle Henrik's Sister.

Anna November 19
I think that mourners are people who come to be sad that someone died.
The mourners were other Jewish refugees.Uncle Henrik Explains to Annemarie that They Just made up great ant burtie so they could put the blankets and clothes in the coffin to save the Jews life so they don't freeze to death when they are on Uncle H.'s boat. Annemarie is matureing a lot when mama didn't return from taking everyone to the boat. she is all alone with Kirsti.

Chapter 10Vocabulary: typhus - a very infectious and deadly disease1. What familiar phrase is in the psalm that Peter reads to the “mourners”?2. How do you think most of the people at Uncle Henrik’s house felt during the wake?3. How does Mama keep the soldier from opening the casket?4. Reread the psalm and Annemarie’s reaction to the reading of it. What do you think is the significance of the title of this book?

Anna November 19th
YAUN!!!!! I am so tired. it is 8:41. Need sleep.
Anyway, Peter says and you will not even be able to NUMBER THE STARS the title of our book. The people at Uncle H.'s house were probaly very nervous when the soldiers came that they would be caught, and they were probaly also excited, that in a few hours, religion practice wouldn't matter anymore. Mama keeps the soldier from opening the casket by saying that she had typhus and that is was still spreadabbale. Annemarie felt way more realaxed when peter read the psalm.
What was the significance of the title of the book?

Chapter 111. What is in the casket?2. Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine?3. One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this.
4. Find a section of this chapter that shows Annemarie no longer thinks of herself as the carefree child she once was.

Anna November 19
8:50 pm
Inside the casket is a bunch of blankets and sweaters to keep the Jews warm. Peter wanted to give medicine so that the baby wouldn't cry when they were outside, trying to be silent, and on the boat, sleeping. Annemarie is by the casket talking to the soldier and she does not really know that there even was a great aunt birtie, but was telling the soldier that she died.

Chapter 121. Do you think Annemarie will meet any soldiers on the way to Uncle Henrik’s boat?2. What observations about waiting does Annemarie make in this chapter?3. Why does Annemarie worry about her mother’s safety

Anna Ward November 19th

Chapter 13
1. Why does Annemarie volunteer to take the packet to Uncle Henrik?
2. Why doesn’t Mama tell Annemarie what is in the basket?

Anna November 20
Annemarie volunteers to take the package to Uncle H. because she wants to show her mama how resonsible she is. Mama dosen't tell her what is in the package because she might have been scared by the soldiers and told them if she met any.

Annemarie also understands that it is crucial for Uncle Henrik to get this packet regardless of what is in it.

2. List three times when the German soldiers are rude to Annemarie.
3. Why does Annemarie act like Kirsti?
4. Did anything Uncle Henrik tell Annemarie surprise you? What?

Anna November 20th
I was schocked at how the soldiers treated her. the soldiers always act like they are more important than anyone else because they ate their food and dropped most of it on the ground. they tel her she is stupid, call her a little girl, and do not put the package away when Annemarie tells them to. She act like Kirsti because she isno't afraid of anything or anyone because Kirsti does not know about the danger around her. I did not know about the hancierchief thing that the people did. that was really clever!!

brave is being strong, courages, even when tou don't know what is going on. Annemarie was really brave. Uncle H. tells annemarie that the rosens are hiding in the secret compertment of the boat. That Kirsti wants to milk the cow to, but that when Annemarie & Uncle H. went to do it, they didn't even do it! HaHaHaHA!!
